6 Essentials for Leading Millennials

Have you ever thought what it takes to lead? Ever wondered, what is it that defines leadership in this age of Millennials?

As a race, we continue to evolve. But one trait has always had it’s presence in all our stages of evolution. That trait is Leadership.

We have banked upon great leaders who have shown us the path ahead. And as the world becomes more competitive by the day, the need for leaders who can guide the people around through their vision, courage and the skill of cutting through chaos is at an all-time high.

Not all of us can be leaders in all situations. But when presented with the opportunity, you need to be equipped with the right mindset and confidence in order to be able to lead.

Naturally, through the course of time, the definition of leadership has changed. From physical dominance to expert knowledge to people management, leadership has undergone it’s own evolution.

The big challenge which organizations face today are: How do we manage the next generation? The generation who are restless, highly energetic, driven and seek a purpose in life. What qualities should a person have in order to lead this seemingly diverse set of individuals?

I have tried to summarize the key traits in the infographic below. For a detailed guide, which tells you how to lead and how to harness the power of these qualities, I have written a short and powerful eBook about Leading Millennials which I am giving away free at the end of this post!

    What a wonderful and inspiring post. Leadership I believe comes in so many forms. Looking at some of these infographics brought back to memory my over 25 years of military service. What I learned about leadership from the military is that you have to be a great follower if you want to be a great leader.

    When I look at the descriptions next to each of these leadership attributes what comes to mind is in order to be a great leader we must put the needs of others before ourselves. People will follow you if you are trustworthy, have empathy, can be decisive, and authentic.

    In the military we have an acronym for LDRSHP – Loyalty, Dedication, Respect, Selfless Service, Honor, Integrity, and Personal Courage. These are the traits that are we are expected to embody as leaders. These traits combined with what you have mentioned here can truly have an impact on so many lives.

    There are so many people that are looking for leadership and your post here today can really push leaders to provide even more of that leadership. Thanks for sharing

    Leaders need some special qualities. And I can see them in your infographic. Authenticity, Vision, Change, Networking, Empathy and Social Media, all 6 are really necessary to be a leader of 21th century.

    I agree, originality is what makes us difference from others. Otherwise, the whole human population would be same as if we were robots. Being Original for me is having different qualities from others and being BOLD.

    I guess without a clear vision there is no destination at all. So a precise vision is a must. Loved that proverb about water. Being flexible brings us loads of opportunities as well.

    Yes, social media does give us a lot of freedom to express opinions and thoughts. :)

    I loved the first point of being authentic, being the real YOU, something that everyone needs to do, more so leaders. That’s how the trust develops and people can relate best to them.

    Having a vision, an aim, a goal is important, as that’s what helps you remain focused. Change for the good is always good, and we need to be ready to embrace change, as and when, without sticking to our limiting beliefs. You are right – open your horizons and think far, think wide, and just go with the flow.

    Yes, great leaders also lead by example and they reach out and connect to build relationships. More than anything else, they are givers, they are the ones who will genuinely care and help you, and pull you through. You rise by lifting others is what I believe in. :)

    Empathy…nothing works without it. To be able to feel what the other person feels is an art that is tough to achieve for most, and if you are able to understand that aspect, you can really do wonders. A kind gesture, being humble and gentle can go a long way. Just be good to others, and do it selflessly- without expecting anything in return.

    I agree with your last point of having a social media presence too, though not all leaders usually go for it, which they should.

    It was brilliant post and I like the line you said “Not all of us can be leaders in all situations.” , Yes its true and Leadership its insipring and enabling others to do their absolute way of best, do together to realize a meaningful and rewarding shared purpose.The problem about the first time leadership faces is they don’t understand that it requires the additional strengths in order to make them as unique and exactly don’t know about managing the things in one stand point.
